  • It's a very good church with very helpful priest. Thank God for our Catholic Church.

  • I'm a visiting parishioner from Cornwall on Hudson. What I love about this church is everything, but let me break it down.

I've been looking for a church that has good music. It may sound trite, pero la musica is mas importante! Mas importante! The music is very important, very important!

Here, the music is unlike that of so many churches I've been to. In so many, there is a sad little guitar trio channeling Peter, Paul and Mary. Or, a hurdy, gurdy-sounding pipe organ churning out songs that are liturgically correct but reminiscent of the pipe organ at the local roller skating rink. The music is arranged, often, like Andrew Lloyd Weber deigned to drop in for some impromptu musical theatre lessons and left without further explanation regarding how to incorporate the styling into the overall liturgy. Then in some churches you will encounger the lone, aging white woman at the podium gesticulating assertively with raised hand to rouse parishioners to join in to sing some, sadly, un-inspiringly sung hymn.

Not here. Here (at least at the 5:00 p.m. Sunday) there is a really well rehearsed choir and accompaniment. The arrangements are truly very good and the music director and her or his musicians and choral group are to be commended.

It cannot be stated too often how vital music is to the liturgy. It cannot be observed how rarely the average parish gets this right.

Here, they get it right and they are to be congratulated.

The church itself is beautiful: the apse, quite wonderful and restrained in color, but soaring and inspiring nonetheless and appropriate for instilling the sense of grandeur fitting for the liturgy of the holy sacrifice of the mass.

Each priest I have had offer the liturgy has done so thoughtfully, the homilies being well presented and approachable for all types of Catholics and believers.

I really! Like the bit of time at the finish of the mass when new visitors are welcomed, and birthdays, anniversaries, and other moments recognized. I realize the long term parishioners may be eager to be on their way, but this little, brief moment really creates the sense of community that our Protestant brothers and sisters are really good at but we Catholics often overlook: pay attention hierarchy!

Ah, yes, if you are looking for true catholicity and by that I mean universality which is the actual meaning of diversity, look no further. The church is a veritable league of nations. No, gallant elderly white men do not do the collections nor lead the parishioners aisle by aisle to communion. This is all done by the young people and they are of every stripe and charming and kindly.

So, you can see, I love this place and I encourage you, if you are a visitor, a lapsed Catholic, an inquirer: go to St. Peter's and join in if only briefly with a very engaging church who worship as the body of Christ.

Just watched an old silent film from 1920 on Amazon video channel included as part of AmazonPrime which was filmed in Haverstraw.
It is titled "Headin' Home" and is a totally fictional account of the then 25 year old Babe Ruth's rise to the major leagues. In it he hits a towering home run from the baseball field STILL located south of St. Peter's Church which breaks through the 'newly installed' stained glass window over the alter on that side of the church. What an historical honor for the town of Haverstraw that The Babe filmed there. What a treat for me to see the young Babe as a fit young ballplayer, (during his first season with the Yankees) since so much of what exists of his image in the media is images of him in later times with his large belly ( which him being The Babe did not seem to hinder him nonetheless ) It is a very corny plot and there is no sound so you must read everything in the lingo of that bygone time, however I am so glad that I experienced this 74 min. silent film. If you have AmazonPrime you can watch it for free. Residents of Haverstraw, NY be it known that 95+ years later the longtime deceased Mr. Babe Ruth has put you on the map with this 57 y.o. baseball fan living in Tucson, AZ. I'd like to come visit someday.
